Application The Sep/Oct 2012 issue of SIMULIA Community News contains an article on the fluid-structure interaction simulation of flexible wind turbine blades.

NUMECA coupled its FINE/Open flow solver with the Dassault ABAQUS structural solver to provide accurate prediction of aero-elastic effects.

The aero-elastic analysis is a critical step in the design process of wind turbines towards understanding of the dynamic response of the blades in terms of maximum deformation and stress. This analysis is not restricted to safety requirements but can also be used to develop passive control systems, which would take advantage of the fluid-structure interaction with composite materials.
