EnSight Adds Support for AMD Opteron, Athlon64 and Mac OS X

Post Processing EnSight 7.6 recently added support for AMD's Opteron and Athlon 64-bit systems running Linux, and support for Apple's Mac OS X platform is under development.

EnSight 7.6 runs as a 64-bit application able to take advantage of increased memory and data pipelines. When installing EnSight, users will find a new machine type, linux_2.4_64, that designates the 64-bit executables for these AMD systems.

Currently, AMD-based Solaris and Windows 64-bit systems are not supported. Contact CEI for these platforms. Running EnSight 7.6 as a 32-bit application under the Windows 64-bit or Linux operating system has not officially been tested nor is it supported.

CEI is currently testing a prototype of its software suite on the Macintosh OS X platform. Included in the suite are EnSight, EnSight Gold, EnLiten and EnVideo. CEI successfully demonstrated these prototype applications at the SuperComputing 2003 conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

Official support will be for the Panther (10.3) version of Mac OS X, which includes support from Apple for X11 graphics. Jaguar (10.2) users will need to install the X11 server in order to upgrade to Panther for its software enhancements and improved X11 support. EnSight, EnSight Gold and EnLiten are currently X11-based applications. EnVideo is already a native Mac OS application.

Testing indicates performance is equivalent to other major desktop computing platforms.

Currently the Power Mac G5 is not supported, but support for the platform is planned.

CEI's flexible architecture supports mixing of computer platforms within a single visualization session, within a workgroup, or even across an entire corporate network. Macintosh support allows Mac users to connect to other Macs or non-Mac versions of EnSight for remote client-server visualization, collaborative visualization, cluster-based visualization and multi-tiled displays for large visualization systems.

CEI's licensing model is platform independent. Mac users within existing CEI customer sites can simply install the applications and contact the network administrator to obtain the license key to use the software.

CEI expects to release the Mac OS X version in Q1 2004 after testing is completed.
