News A performance study of ANSYS® FLUENT® 12.0 was conducted between Panasas, the University of Cambridge, and ANSYS to demonstrate the benefits of the new parallel I/O scheme in ANSYS FLUENT.

The study compares release 12.0 with 6.3 for solver and data-write timings of industrial CFD models scaled from 16 to 256 processing cores.

Motivation for the study was to help quantify the performance advantages of a 6.3-to-12 migration on a cluster with a parallel vs. NFS storage solution for data-intensive CFD applications. Results demonstrate as much as a 2.3X performance gain in total simulation turn-around time.

Key findings of the study include:

  • Release 12.0+Panasas performed solution data writes at rates of up to 39X faster than 6.3+NFS
  • In total job turn-around time, release 12.0+Panasas was as much as 2.3X faster than 6.3+NFS
  • For the same ANSYS license budget, release 12.0+Panasas can provide 2.3X higher utilization

CAE parallel performance and job turn-around times continue to be an important factor behind engineering decisions to develop FEA and CFD models at higher fidelity. Most parallel CAE simulations use scalable clusters for their HPC requirements, but for certain classes of CAE models, data I/O can severely degrade scalability and limit overall CAE effectiveness. Panasas offers a parallel storage capability that scales I/O and overcomes data bottlenecks, enabling ANSYS software to scale to its full potential.

Panasas fully integrates its parallel file system software with a storage hardware architecture in appliance configurations designed to optimize leading applications such as those from ANSYS. In addition to high performance, Panasas also offers data protection and reliability while providing reduced installation costs and ease of administration.

Panasas recently announced a new family of ActiveStor products – the Series 7, 8, and 9, which each support parallel I/O and high performance CAE throughput, and ANSYS recently announced its new software ANSYS release 12. ANSYS and Panasas have a long established business and technical alliance, and work jointly to provide a high level of support for customers using ANSYS software on Panasas storage.
