Announcements Newmerical Technologies International, McGill University and Y-MAX jointly present Effective Use of CFD for In-flight Icing Certification to be held May 26 to 28, 2008 in Tokyo, Japan.

Aircraft, Rotorcraft and UAVs flying through icing clouds encounter the problem of ice formation on critical surfaces, on nacelles and in engines. This can jeopardize flight by altering aerodynamic performance and reducing handling qualities.

CFD is proving itself a cost-effective aid-to-design-and-certification tool. The current trend is to bring to bear “advanced, integrated and realistic” 3D simulations, using new physical models, to more completely explore the combined flight and icing envelopes, optimize designs, and focus tunnel and flight tests.

The course illustrates the state-of-the-art of CFD applications in icing simulations and links theory to applications. This course should be of value to all concerned with in-flight icing, and is structured to be of equal interest to simulation code users, detection and protection systems manufacturers, regulators, ACOs and DERs. The instructors bring a wealth of aggregate knowledge, as they comprise scientists, engineers and code developers.

Lectures will include:

  • In-flight Icing Fundamentals
  • General Introduction to CFD
  • CFD Methods for Simulating In-Flight Icing
  • CFD Methods for Simulating Water Impingement
  • CFD Methods for Simulating Ice Accretion
  • Ice Protection Equipment
  • CFD Methods for Simulating Anti-icing and De-icing
  • Handling Qualities Issues in Icing
  • Challenges in Modeling Aircraft In-flight Icing
  • CFD in Aid of Certification (Aircraft Case Study)
  • CFD in Aid of Certification for Rotorcraft, Nacelles, Jet Engines, UAVs, Sensors, Detectors, Optronics
  • Challenges in Modeling Engines & Rotorcraft In-flight Icing
