Controlling battery temperature is key for maintaining optimum battery performance and longer battery life. Although not as high in cooling capacity as a liquid-cooling systems, air-cooled systems can often be lighter weight, more reliable and less expensive, so are an option for compact vehicle configurations.

This presentation introduces methods and value in performing cooling analysis using fully CAD-Embedded Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to allow earlier thermal performance prediction. Particular applications include initial battery packaging studies and exploring integration with the vehicle structure. An air-cooled battery pack system example is simulated using FloEFD for Siemens NX. The presentation demonstrates time saving studies to determine the effects geometric design changes on cooling capacity for maintaining proper mean temperature and temperature distribution throughout the pack.

What You Will Learn

  • An Introduction to an example air cooled battery pack example model
  • Interpreting design studies in to define CFD analysis incl. model set up and boundary conditions
  • Preparing CFD studies within the CAD Environment
  • Interpreting results for a battery pack cooling study to evaluate flow rates and temperature distribution
  • Identify time savings via fast automated CFD meshing allow for more iterative studies
  • Setting up customized results to help identify design enhancements may be most effective
