CFD For Gas Turbines Made Easier

News The CD adapco Group claims to have solved the problem of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) mesh generation for gas turbine design with a new software tool, es-turbo. The 'es' prefix denotes the Expert System nature of the software that enables it to be 'taught' to apply the optimum methodology to solve application-specific problems, in this case mesh generation and pre-/post-postprocessing for CFD. The CD adapco Group were empowered to develop this highly effective tool through their engineering services / consultancy work for major clients such as Dresser-Rand and General Electric.

With es-turbo, the simulation of complex geometries in gas turbines including stationary and rotating blade rows is made simpler by its ability to automatically create high quality computational meshes. Users of CFD codes, including the CD adapco Group's own code, STAR-CD, can be freed from time-consuming mesh generation, allowing them to focus on the real engineering challenges of optimizing the performance and efficiency of land-based gas turbines.

With es-turbo's multi-blocked meshing strategy it is possible to quickly generate high quality grids around aerodynamic bodies in both axial and centrifugal configurations. By using one of the predefined topologies, the confusion associated with many multi block grid generators is eliminated. This also significantly reduces the user input and the time required for building a computational model. For more complex geometric features, such as part span shrouds, cooling holes and casing treatments, es-turbo easily interfaces with the automatic meshing capabilities of STAR-CD's pre- and post-processor. Geometries that would take weeks with conventional multi-block codes can now be meshed in hours.

Steve MacDonald, General Manager and Director of the CD adapco Group says "If you are looking to increase your productivity, consider adding es-turbo to your CFD capabilities. It may be the last and only grid generation tool you will ever need, and more than that, its Expert System approach will guide you as never before, to better and faster CFD solutions".
