As an open-source project, growing vibrant user and developer communities is a crucial goal for the SU2 team, and we continue to pour our energy into delivering the best possible tools. Thanks to the hard work of our development team and the support and encouragement of thousands of users around the world, SU2 is now the preferred open-source alternative for CFD analysis and design in compressible flows. At this time, we are excited to announce the official release of SU2 version 4.0 "Cardinal."

This release marks the fourth major version of the SU2 open-source code since the initial offering in January 2012. SU2 is a collection of C++ software tools for performing Partial Differential Equation (PDE) analysis and for solving PDE-constrained optimization problems, with special emphasis on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and aerodynamic shape design.
SU2 v4.0 has a number of notable new capabilities, including:
- Non-ideal compressible fluid flows (NICFD): Van der Waals and Peng-Robinson equations of state.
- Fully-parallel pre-processing with ParMETIS.
- SA-neg turbulence model.
- Adaptive CFL.
- Easily generate FFD boxes with new options.
- Force breakdown file and FieldView output.
- Scale, rotate, translate meshes in SU2_DEF.
- Iterative smoothers: Jacobi, LU-SGS, ILU(0).
- General bug fixes and performance improvements.
SU2 v4.0 is now available on GitHub and our download page. As always, we are grateful to the open-source community for their interest, help, support, and development.
