Application: Simulation Helps Office Workers Stay Warm in Winter, Cool in Summer

Engineers at Olof Granlund Oy, Helsinki, Finland, substantially improved the thermal comfort of a new building by using computer simulation during the design process to identify and fix air circulation and other problems. The energy analysis programs usually used to evaluate thermal comfort in a new building only predict average temperatures for a given space, so it's impossible to determine if, for example, it will be uncomfortably cold near a window.

Granlund engineers overcame this problem by using CFX-5 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis software to provide temperature, airflow velocity and pressure predictions at any point in the building. Engineers first used this method to model existing buildings and found the simulation predictions to be useful for design process.
